Bio‑based facade materials

Biogenic facade materials

We are developing new biogenic façade solutions in timber, cork and thatch, all based on fast and cost‑efficient installation methods.

ONV’s ambition is to help drive the development of sustainable and innovative construction methods, and to share our knowledge in support of a collective green transition.

The development of biogenic façade systems for multi‑storey buildings is highly technical and strictly regulated due to extensive fire safety requirements.

Can we, for example, construct six‑storey buildings up to 22 metres in height, built in timber and clad with bio‑based materials that are neither fire‑protected nor equipped with sprinkler systems?

ONV Arkitekter, together with the Fælledby team, is part of the BioFacades:UpHigh partnership. Through a series of full‑scale façade fire tests, we demonstrate how structural design strategies can prevent vertical fire spread and provide a safe alternative to existing pre‑approved solutions.

The objectives of BioFacades:UpHigh are:

– To analyse and document solutions through ten full‑scale façade fire tests that can prevent fire spread to upper floors.

– To realise untreated bio‑based façades in three concrete demonstration buildings.

– To formulate general guidelines based on the results, enabling future pre‑approved solutions for buildings in Fire Class 2, and to develop design principles that will shape the future of façade architecture in Denmark.

– To make all examples publicly accessible and free of charge through the online portal developed in the sister project Wood:UpHigh.
